August Newsletter

A quick word from Jennifer:

Two thirds of the parents we surveyed recognize our slogan “read with a child twenty minutes a day”. It’s a simple manageable message and the South Sound Reading Foundation is here to share it and share resources to ensure reading is not only doable but also easy and fun.  And summer is no exception!  Take a book outside, read under a tree or under the stars. Share you love of reading and books with your children, read together 20 minutes a day, and your children will grow up to be eager, engaged readers.

Pop-Up Book Drives

To make book donation social and fun, we’ve developed a new Book Donation Score Sheet for competitive giving! The points are awarded based on our highest areas of need; the rules are based on CDC guidelines.

If you’d like to learn more, or host your own pop-up drive, email Rebecca at rjewell@nthurston.k12.wa.us

Book Van Scheduling

We’re reaching out to community partners with a new JotForm to schedule book giveaways! If you know any landlords, trailer park managers, or HOA presidents who might be interested, then please share the link: https://form.jotform.com/202085762219152

Bag-o-Books Continues

We've shared 1,545 free books directly with families so far! If you know someone who would benefit, please direct them here to request books for the whole family: https://form.jotform.com/201476922685160

  • We're handling requests in the order received, and so far have been able to fill requests within a week of ordering.
  • Books can then be picked up on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays between 10am and 3pm at our office: 200 Sleater-Kinney Rd NE Olympia, WA 98506.
  • Books will be in a bag marked with their name on a cart outside our door. This minimizes unnecessary contact while still providing services for our community.

Requests have slowed down considerably for the free Bag O’ Books program, though we hope for a resurgence once the sun goes away and the weather turns nice and drizzly again. In the meantime, we’d appreciate all of you sharing our request form with everyone you know! The more people who know about this, the more families we can help.

Farewell, Berkeley!

Berkeley’s service year was full of unique challenges and surprises, ranging from novel trips to Aberdeen to a global pandemic. We will be forever grateful for her dedication and grace under pressure. One of her lasting legacies with SSRF will be her new organization system for the Storytime library! Every time we use her directory, we’ll smile and remember her.

Best of luck on your next adventure, Berkeley and congratulations on completing your national service!
